A Medina Backyard, Rebuilt From the Ground Up

This project rebuilt an aging, poorly installed patio into a fully realized outdoor living space designed around how the homeowners actually use their backyard. Bear Landscaping & Design led the project end to end—correcting foundational grading issues, expanding the footprint, and integrating hardscape, plantings, drainage, and irrigation into a single cohesive space.

The Challenge

The homeowners had inherited an installation from a previous contractor that never worked. The grading was off, drainage hadn’t been addressed, and the existing 400 sq ft patio didn’t come close to supporting how they wanted to gather, entertain, and spend time outdoors. Before any new work could begin, the underlying site conditions had to be corrected.

The Solution

Bear Landscaping & Design rebuilt the space from the ground up, growing the patio nearly four times its original footprint to roughly 1,500 sq ft. The full scope included:

  • Corrected site grading and new concrete pad
  • Paver patio installation
  • Seating walls
  • Gas fire pit
  • Dry river beds
  • Steps and retaining wall
  • Landscape design and plant installation
  • Full lawn installation
  • New drainage system
  • New irrigation system

Bear Landscaping & Design led the landscape design directly with the homeowners, guiding the vision for the patio space and refining the plant selection to fit the property.

The Result

What began as an undersized, improperly installed patio is now an integrated outdoor living space built for daily use and entertaining. Correcting the grading and installing proper drainage and irrigation protects the investment for the long term, while the expanded footprint, seating walls, fire pit, and plantings create a space designed around Medina, Ohio, conditions and how the homeowners actually live in their yard.
